generating energy at a rate of 1.4 Mega Watt hours per day.

Specialist in Combining Wind and Solar

for on grid and off grid systems

About Tecnico

Tecnico designs, installs and
maintains renewable energy
systems with any combination of
wind turbines, solar pv and hydro
power throughout New Zealand.

Established in 1999, Tecnico is based in the Wairarapa and
works throughout New Zealand and the Pacific.

Tecnico has introduced a range of strong and robust wind
turbines to New Zealand.

They are quiet and have been designed and built for the
harsh winds we have in New Zealand and the Pacific.

Tecnico undertakes maintenance in some very remote
areas. We offer a range of energy assessments to identify
your best form of generation which may be a combination
of two or more of Wind, Solar or Hydro

Our Installations

Wind Turbines

With over 20 years of experience installing wind and solar throughout NZ and Pacific we have a
wide range of wind turbines to suit your power needs.

Our wind turbines have been selected to suit New Zealand conditions and are very robust and
warranted to winds over 200 km per hour, well over NZ wind speeds. They are quiet and easy to
maintain. They have a design life of 25 years but with a small over haul significantly longer. They
are therefore a very good property investment. We provide a range of domestic size from 2 kW
to 20 kW.

The average house is suited to a 3 - 5kW turbine. We also supply a wide range of other sizes
including smaller and larger where required.

Wind Power

COMBINED WIND AND SOLAR SYSTEM

In many situations the optimum solution may be a combined wind and solar which evens out the power so you have
a consistent supply of energy without large peaks and troughs. Research I have conducted on Matiu-Somes Island
with an installation of off grid wind and solar (published) shows the clear benefit of combining wind and solar. The
benefits being: a smaller wind turbine, solar array and battery bank. Also, less reliance on diesel or mains back-up.

Tony can design your system and give you everything you need to start
producing your own electricity delivered to your location.

SOLAR

Tony is highly experienced at installing stand alone solar arrays as well as combined wind and solar. In the past Tony
solarised New Zealand's lighthouse service when he was the engineer manager in charge of NZ’s lighthouse
maintenance. He has had more than 30 years experience in developing good systems for NZ's climate.

Tecnico provides high quality solar panels with small systems starting at about $6,000. Our solar panels are top
quality and reliable unlike many cheaper versions and are all warranted to 5 years.

Please note that you cannot compare kW ratings of wind and solar as a 3 kW turbine in a good wind area can
provide 5 times the energy of a 3 kW solar array and also tends to provide it more consistently through the
day and night. The only comparison that is effective is comparing the daily out puts throughout the year.

With solar unless you intend having battery support then the optimum solution (financially) is to supply about 30-
50% of your power needs depending on how much energy you can use directly during the day when the sun is shining
compared with having to export to the grid at wholesale price and having to purchase it back in the evening at retail
prices. Each kW of solar will provide around 1300 kWh per year depending on where you are in the country and on
local conditions.

If you have a good wind resource on your property a wind turbine remains the most cost effective system.

Tony can advise on the optimum system for you.

COMBINED WIND AND SOLAR SYSTEM

In many situations the optimum solution may be a combined wind and solar which evens out the power so
you have a consistent supply of energy without large peaks and troughs which often happens with single
generation system. A wind and solar system will cut down the amount of space required.

Solar Panels

We have a wide range of inverters for all situations including battery, hybrid, wind and solar
inverters

in both on and off grid installations.

Inverters SMA

Sunny Family of Inverters

SMA produce a range of inverters designed for both grid connect and stand alone systems.

Inverters Ginlong

Outback Inverters

Outback Inverters are designed for off-grid situations.

DEYE inverters

Provide a range of Grid Tied, Off Grid and Hybrid inverters.

Inverters

Tecnico supplies a range of batteries and will
design and recommend the best battery for the
situation. Some of the characteristics of the
different types of battery are:

Battery System

  • We provide both fully off grid and grid connected
systems that will continue to power your property if
mains power fails. A set of batteries and inverter but
does give financial advantages of making better use
of your own power in addition to the security of
    keeping power available.

  • We provide a range of batteries including new
technologies. I am happy to discuss the relative costs
    and benefits of the technologies.

  • I keep up to date with battery research and
    development.

A combined wind and solar

batteries.

Live Monitoring and Tracking Displays & Dashboards

Tecnico can provide full monitoring services of energy equipment and other peripheral measurements.

We can monitor and display over the internet power consumption and generation, water and gas usage, temperature
measurements, wind speed and direction.

Having reliably captured the energy consumption and or power production data, it is then transmitted, secured and
then, in near real time, this data is converted into meaningful, power consumption / energy production graphics, web
reports and dashboards. Each display is tailored to meet the needs of the audience to provide insight, education and
even aid in selecting the most appropriate renewable energy device based on historical data and performance
averages.

Transmission of data is achieve by either Ethernet connection, GSM link or by collecting data on a local data logger
and manually downloading – suitable for wind measurements before installing a turbine when there are no
communications available.

Information display can be designed to suit your own requirements.

Energy consumption and power production data can be used in schools, business, community groups, people
passionate about their energy devices.

Monitoring

Wind Measurement

Where there is not enough
information available to assess
local wind speeds we can install
a wind logger to measure and
analyse wind speeds.

Frequently asked

questions

Q. Will my wind turbine survive strong winds?

A. This depends upon the quality of wind turbine. We have sourced Ryse Wind turbines which are designed to withstand
extreme weather conditions as often experienced in New Zealand. They are warranted to hurricane strength. Some of the
problems that some cheaper wind turbines experience are due not only to high winds but to shifting

turbulent winds which can be destructive.

Wind turbines Tecnico have installed are in some of the most windy spots in the world such as the Southern Alps,
Waimakariri Gorge and Matiu Somes Island in Wellington Harbour.

Q. Are these turbines noisy?

A. No. The wind turbines we supply are quiet, the noise of the wind is higher than any noise the turbine will make.

Do I have enough wind?

A. In general terms for a wind turbine you need an average wind speed of at least 5m/s (10 Knots). There can be instances
where lower winds can still make it worthwhile to use wind but you will need to have a good record of the wind speed
distribution. If it is uncertain if you have enough wind we can carry out a series of site surveys starting with looking at the
general wind speeds for your area and culminating in taking wind readings for a period of at least three months.

Which is best between Wind, Solar and Hydro?

A. Every situation is different and depends upon the amount of each type of resource available. Hydro is usually the most
cost effective if there is enough water and a large enough head available. Wind out performs solar with an average wind
speed of about 5 - 6m/s or more. Off grid sites often benefit from a combination of generation sources to ensure there is
greater likelihood of at least operating at any time.
